Ceymone, a mental health therapist, comes from a long line of family members who are self-educated and self-motivated, and she’s been reflecting on how unions have helped immigrant workers like her mother and her grandfather succeed throughout history.
Spending the day reading, learning and connecting my present to my past. My mum used to tell me stories of moments she’d hide away in bookstores on her days off from working in the @gtownsc paper mill as a young adult and how literature always provided an escape. I come from an immigrant family that has blended roots in physical and domestic labor in the working class. Unions have consistently provided support and resources to help support families through furloughs, layoffs, and unstable economic periods. My grandfather had formalized education until 8th grade and still remains one of the smartest men I have ever known. I am reflecting quite a bit in my 30s. Continuously self-auditing and standing on the shouldered memories of my personal giants.
