In a society that unfortunately frequently exploits workers, one of our biggest legal assets are labor unions. These hard (and I mean HARD earned) wins include minimum wage, employee healthcare, sick days, and overtime pay, to name a few. During times where, more than ever, health is wealth and also wealth is wealth, these worker rights are literally the difference between life and death. Studies have found Unionized workers have been proven to earn on average 11.2% more in wages than nonunionized peers, and Black and Latino workers have even more to gain than their nonunionized peers. A union may also be the difference between adequate and inadequate covid protection gear.
Something I’ve learned in 2020, is we gotta look into our traditions before just blindly following our habits. Grateful I took the time to learn more about this american holiday. I’ve learned so much and have resources for anyone who may be curious!
